About:
Monthly improvisation sessions welcome musicians, dancers, movers, painters, writers, and artists of all types in any stage of their career into a shared space where they can explore, improvise, and experiment together.
Come prepared to:
- Explore free improvisation practices across discipline and genre in open jam formats, and guided prompts. No prior improvisation experience is required, just an interest to explore and experiment. Examples might be a violinist, pianist, cellist, guitar with effects pedals, building worlds of sound together in response to a live painter or dancer. Another example might be a writer improvising one sentence prompts that form the basis for a group improvisation.
- Learn from other artists of other genres and disciplines. How does a painter apply a musical concept like crescendo to their work? What are analogies to melody and harmony in movement? How do we construct phrasing as artists? Do we think of it as a story, or a sentence, or an object with properties like inertia and gravity? What is grammar to a painter, dissonance to a writer, or texture to a mover? How do we make sense of our creative processes and practices and learn from each other. Let's communicate together about how we create, form new connections, learn from each other and experiment together.
- Make new creative connections. Part of the idea of this group is to bring artists of different types together who may otherwise not meet or collaborate. My hope is that attendees of the sessions would leave with new ideas about how they can expand their own work, or new connections that may form the basis for new projects or new directions. Let's create a creative community where we can support each other, and create new opportunities to create and share.
- Sessions are open and participants are free to come and go as time allows. No sign up or RSVP is necessary but if you would like to reserve a spot, or if you have questions email us at Seattlecollaborationsociety@gmail.com.
This group is for:
- Musicians, dancers, painters, writers, photographers, sculptors, etc, in other words, any artists of any discipline who has a genuine interest in exploring improvisation and experimentation across genre and discipline.
- Professionals/students/amateurs at any stage of their career or education who actively practice their discipline(s) and consider it to be their profession, among their professions, or a profession they hope to explore.
- Networking across discipline.
This group is not for:
- Performers/artists etc looking for a space to rehearse or try out material unrelated to the group. (For example a rock band wanting to include dancers in their next music video, or a choreographer who wants to rehearse a new piece with live strings.) Come to learn, come to explore, come to experiment, come to collaborate, or come to network, but please rehearse/compose your own work at a separate time. This holds for participants as well as group session leaders.
- Those who are uninterested in practicing a discipline. These sessions are to help support and inspire people who want to make things, write things, perform things, move, play, paint, interact, create etc... For those who do not wish to create/perform themselves but love the arts, there will be other opportunities to connect with Seattle Collaboration Society, through performances of interdisciplinary work, periodic masterclasses, and workshops. Join our mailing list and learn more about upcoming events.
- Participants must be 18 years or older.
